We Have RSS!

We now have RSS feeds. I was finally able to convince the fine folks at Blogger to set me up with Blogger Pro. I have been trying to get Pro for weeks while they retool. I now need to tweak my template to fix the headlines, but the basic feed works.

The RSS Feed Is Here

MetaFrame Helps Visually Impaired

Citrix is partnering with GW Micro to make their screen reading software for the visually impaired work with MetaFrame. This truly is anytime, anywhere, any-device, any-connection access that Citrix talks about so much.

Bill Gates On Spam

Bill Gates wrote a pretty interesting letter to the U.S. Senate Committee regarding Spam. In the letter he talked about Microsoft's approach to this issue. I have read many other proposals on how to deal with SPAM and I tend to lean toward a grass-roots (do it yourself) approach until there can be a consensus from the major players. I am also not convinced any type of government involvement would do much good.

Now if Microsoft would stop sending out so much Spam of their own.

Get your NT 4.0 Workstation Support Calls In Before July 1

Microsoft will stop taking support calls for any NT 4.0 Workstation issues at the end of June. Hopefully NT 4.0 Workstation is well on the way out the door in your organization. Windows NT 4.0 Server will still have phone support available until the end of 2004.

Grid Computing

Grid computing is some cool technology I follow from a far distance. I can just imagine harnessing the power of every desktop computer in a company to do something cool with all those CPU cycles. Think of it as a corporate version of SETI@home.

Digital Photography To Replace Film By 2008

I don't think it will take that long, but InfoTrends is suggesting by 2008 regular film cameras will be all but gone. Two thoughts- Sell your Kodak stock and go out and buy a digital camera. I got my first digital camera (Nikon Coolpix 900) a few years ago and thought it was amazing at 2 megapixels. Flash forward to today and you will be blown away by the 4+ megapixel cameras on the market for less than $500.

Windows 2000 SP4 Released

Microsoft released SP4 for Windows 2000 yesterday. This incorporates all the previous updates and all the new ones in one place. Let's see, with all the previous patches, this should be a terabyte download.

Every Geek Running Windows XP Pro Should Be Running Remote Desktop

Ok maybe not everyone needs this feature, but it is darn cool to remote control a home PC from work. In a nutshell you need some type of Remote Connection Client and the Remote Desktop Service running on your XP Pro PC (or Terminal Services if running NT or 2000 Server). You will also need to open port 3389 on your personal firewall. I have a little WatchGuard SOHO firewall that I opened up the port and redirected all traffic over port 3389 to go to a specific machine running Remote Desktop. Works like a charm.

Cool Wireless Chat Client

Are you addicted to AOL Instant Messenger (AIM)? Do your kids use your computer to chat all night? If so, this
wireless AIM device
might be the solution for you. Like many of these devices there are a few things that keep me from buying one on the spot. In this case it does not use 802.11b for its wireless access.

I would love a little device that did Hotmail, POP3, chat and had a universal remote all with a nice simple color screen. Think Danger Sidekick, but for 802.11b.

Microsoft Terminal Server FAQ Updated For Windows 2003

Not exactly breaking news I know, but anyone that is currently deploying Citrix or Terminal Services today will be impacted by all the changes when they move to Windows 2003. The new FAQ, updated earlier this year, is full of useful links. Keep in mind licensing is just as confusing as it is today, but they continue to streamline the process.

Novell To Deliver Linux Versions

In a yet another (somewhat strategic) move, Novell is going to port its networking software to Linux. That is all fine, but I would have expected this move a couple years ago with the product already shipping. It looks like it might take them 18 months to actually deliver this new product. By then the server market will have changed two or three more times.

Service Pack 4 for MetaFrame 1.8

Just in case you missed it earlier this month, Citrix released Service Packs for MetaFrame 1.8 under Windows 2000 and for Windows Terminal Server edition. I would not expect many more Service Packs for 1.8 moving forward. The readme file lists over a 100 bugs so it is probably worth your effort to review the new features and fixes if you are still running 1.8.

Microsoft Rebrands Mobile Software

Good lord here they go again changing the name. I guess when you have billions of dollars to spend on marketing it is fine to toss out all the equity you built with your previous billion dollars. I will have to say Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC seems to make more sense than anything called Pocket PC. Has Palm lost this war yet?

Why Microsoft Is Pushing Exchange 2003

Microsoft is doing everything it can to promote the upcoming release of Exchange Server 2003. They have to push, pull and drag customers to Active Directory and offering a killer application or service is one way. I have seen many customers deploy AD based purely on the need to move to Exchange 2000. I am sure many more will move to get the upcoming features in new versions of SQL, Exchange and Terminal Services.

The Corporate Blog Is Catching On

The New York Times has a story about what big companies are doing with blog technology. I truly believe a company blog could be the best way to communicate with employees and customers. I am also anxious to see what other big companies like Microsoft plan to do with employee blogs.

Making Money With Google

Google released a new ad system last week that will allow small websites to publish Google ads and get paid to do it. "Google AdSense is for web publishers who want to make more revenue from advertising on their site while maintaining editorial quality. AdSense delivers text-based Google AdWords ads that are relevant to what your readers see on your pages - and Google pays you."

I am already relying on external services like Haloscan (for comments), Blogrolling (for link management) and of course Blogger (slow, but darn easy to use). I am not sure I want to add yet another external service (ad delivery) or a design element. I have thought about offering a simple one line text link to sponsors and this would compete directly with that. I think I am going to pass for now.

If You Think SPAM Is Bad What About FRAM?

I just ran across the term FRAM in a book - printed on real paper - that is described as an e-mail that contains jokes or other non-essential communication from friends (Friendly Spam or Spam from Friends). It cracked me up when I read about this because I get four or five FRAMs a day, but I never thought it needed a name. Since I personally dislike such e-mails, I vowed a long time ago to never broadcast a joke to everyone in my address book. Do you FRAM?
