You Better Test Patches

Bowulf did a great job of summarizing why you need to fully test patches from Microsoft (and others for that matter). I do buy into the need to test everything in a lab before putting it into production. I wonder how many of you have these testing procedures in place?

The State Of IT Jobs

Network World has a series of articles in their latest edition about the state of IT jobs. The You Issue, 07/21/03

They have even included a handy Salary Calculator. I am not a big believer in calculators like this because they tend to skip a few key variables, but it is usually fun to play with anyway.

Wyse & Neoware Continue Software Expansion

Neoware Systems Inc. and Wyse Technology Inc. continue to expand their software capabilities. eWeek did a nice job of reviewing their new software products. I know this shift has been in the making for some time (years in one case) and I personally applaud both of them for attempting to provide us with useful tools to manage thin clients and Terminal Servers.

Pew Internet Study On File-sharing and Copyright

From the Pew Internet site: The number of downloaders who say they don’t care about copyright has increased since July-August 2000, when 61% of a smaller number of downloaders said they didn’t care about the copyright status of their music files.

Of those Internet users who share files online (such as music or video) with others, 65% say they do not care whether the files they share are copyrighted or not. Thirty percent say they do care about the copyright status of the files they share, and 5% said they don’t know or don’t have a position.

USB iGrill

For those of you that just have to cook your hamburgers while surfing the net, I give you the George Foreman USB iGrill. As your meal cooks, the subtle glow from under the unit increases brightness and pulses faster until your meal is perfectly done. (thanks PM for a great April Fools link) This USB vibrator is for real.

Should Wi-Fi Hotspots Be Free?

I just read an interesting story (via boingboing) that suggests that retailers providing Wi-Fi hotspots should be offering the service for free as a customer acquistion tool rather than charge a fee. The author says it costs as little as $6 a day to provide free service, but the price jumps to $30 a day if you have to figure in all the customer care and infrastructure needed for billing.

Are you listening Starbucks? I know for a fact that I would seek out a coffee shop or bookstore (and buy a cup of $3 coffee) if it had free Wi-Fi access.

Skip The New Napster

Skip the new paid Napster, like most of you will anyway, and go straight to new network software like DirectConnect from NeoModus.

CNN.com had a story about the "private" networks being setup to help swappers avoid the RIAA. Anyone want to DirectConnect with me?

Windows Server 2003 Terminal Services Licensing

I attended a presentation recently on what is new with Windows Server 2003 Terminal Services Licensing. In a nutshell there is a new Terminal Services "User" CAL that allows for roaming users with multiple devices.

Also new to the plan is the elimination of the built-in TS CAL that came with Windows 2000 Pro or XP Pro. Under the new plan you will need a 2003 TS CAL for each device or user that connects no matter what OS. I personally think this is great because it makes licensing much simpler (there is a transition plan to transfer an old TS CAL to the new plan, and in many cases for free).

There are downgrade rights as well. This will allow you to buy Windows 2003 TS CALs today and use them in your Windows 2000 infrastructure.

I transcribed much of what I heard and created a simple web page that outlines the overall changes. Windows Server 2003 Licensing Presentation

There is also a great Windows Server 2003 Terminal Services Licensing document (700K Word File) on the Microsoft site you should review.
