IM Language Translation

I ran across an article on Slashdot.org about how Microsoft has applied for a Patent for translating instant messages from one language to another on the fly. I am amazed that no one has done this before, but imagine how this might open up all sorts of international communication. My first thought was offshore tech support.

Microsoft's Plan to End the Patch Management Nightmare

Wininformant.com has a great update on what Microsoft plans to do in early 2004 to end the patch management hell we all live with today. The article also includes a link to an article from Microsoft on Security Patch Management.

Notebooks outsell desktops for the first time in U.S.

I can't remember the last time my company bought a traditional desktop PC so it really does not surprise me that notebooks outsell desktops for the first time in the U.S. according to various reports this week.

Sharepoint Portal Server 2003 Right Around The Corner

Looks like Microsoft is shipping the Beta 2 code for Sharepoint Portal Server 2003. Some new features include better customization and enterprise scalability. I know my main concern with the original version was that it seemed like a .5 release that was not polished or ready for prime time. It was also a resource hog and always seemed very slow.

An Amazon Insiders Blog

Bizstone had an interesting link to an Amazon employees blog. I am anxious to see how companies like Microsoft, Google and Amazon adress the employee blogger movement. It looks like Amazon embraces the idea, but I am guessing there is a nice thick HR manual behind what can and can't be discussed.

First High Definition PVR

Zenith is now selling a HD PVR to compete somewhat with Tivo. I am not all that excited by this product because it costs over $900 and records less than 10 hours of programming, but maybe some competition from Zenith will speed up development of a HD PVR from Tivo.

Microsoft's Virtual Machine

Microsoft has gotten very aggressive with their purchase of Connectix. It seems like so many companies buy other companies and take months (or even years) to merge products. In this case Microsoft is doing all this within weeks. That either speaks to how much Microsoft needs this technology or Connectix is just that good.

You can sign up for an evaluation or read the FAQ to get more information, but if you are really interested you might check out the Connectix site for a downloadable evaluation. Joelonsoftware.com has a nice little mini review.

How Does Apple's 'Panther' Stack Up & Why You Should Care

Microsoft Watch has an interesting review of the next generation Mac OS called Panther. Why should you care? Because it is likely that what you see in this version from Apple is likely to enfluence what Microsoft does with the next version of Windows. It is great to see some competition in the OS arena.

Dealing With Failed Auto-Created Printers In MetaFrame

Doug Brown has developed some software to deal with failed auto-created printers under MetaFrame XP. I know this can be a big deal for some companies, so I would suggest you check it out if you have this issue. You will need to have XP FR2, the farm running in native mode and the .Net framework installed on the server that runs this software.

My Favorite RSS Reader

My new favorite is FeedDemon. It is very intuitive and makes it easy to view all the latest news with the "Listing Newspaper" feature which shows you the updated news for all your feeds on one page in newspaper style. Give it a shot.

Is Google God?

That is the title of an OP/Ed piece in the New York Times by Thomas Friedman. Friedman suggests that a combination of Google and WIFI is somewhat like God in that God is wireless, all knowing and everywhere. I can buy into this to some degree, but the column takes a strange twist in that Friedman goes further to suggest that since the Internet is growing like crazy we, as Americans, need to be more sensitive to how other countries perceive us because a combination of easy Internet access anywhere (Google and WIFI) will make it easier to rally like minded folks against us (terrorists).

I don't dispute his concern about the technology, but I think the Internet has allowed us to break down racial and cultural barriers. I think that easy anywhere access to information about other cultures has helped to diversify our thoughts.
