Windows Server 2003 Terminal Services Licensing

I attended a presentation recently on what is new with Windows Server 2003 Terminal Services Licensing. In a nutshell there is a new Terminal Services "User" CAL that allows for roaming users with multiple devices.

Also new to the plan is the elimination of the built-in TS CAL that came with Windows 2000 Pro or XP Pro. Under the new plan you will need a 2003 TS CAL for each device or user that connects no matter what OS. I personally think this is great because it makes licensing much simpler (there is a transition plan to transfer an old TS CAL to the new plan, and in many cases for free).

There are downgrade rights as well. This will allow you to buy Windows 2003 TS CALs today and use them in your Windows 2000 infrastructure.

I transcribed much of what I heard and created a simple web page that outlines the overall changes. Windows Server 2003 Licensing Presentation

There is also a great Windows Server 2003 Terminal Services Licensing document (700K Word File) you should review.

Should Microsoft Offer Free Antivirus Technology

I have often wondered if Microsoft should be responsible for providing some basic level of antivirus protection. I think they should and I know they plan on it in future versions of Windows. Paul Thurrott of Wininformant has written a somewhat controversial article over at Windows & .Net Magazine that outlines the two paths Microsoft could take.

Wyse Lockdown Software

Wyse has released their Alcatraz software that turns an old PC into a locked-down "terminal." This could be a great way to extend the life of old computers while getting the same security as a Windows terminal. Even though you could do much of this, in theory, with built-in tools, there is something to be said for installing a package and it just working out of the box.

A Windows Competitor to I-Tunes

I have been playing with BuyMusic.com and I will have to say I am impressed. Every album I have purchased over the last year is here. I am not thrilled with the digital rights management, but I am ok with it for this test. I truly believe the market will dictate where rights management will take us.

My biggest problem with it? I don't have (or take) time to listen to that much music these days. I must be getting old. Give it a shot and let me know what you think.

MetaFrame XP vs. Windows 2003 Terminal Services

One of my favorite new tech blogs, kous.net, has a link to a value-add feature guide (PDF) comparing Windows 2003 Terminal Services to Citrix's MetaFrame XP. This is written from a Citrix perspective, and of course Citrix wins, but it is nice to have many of the key features listed and compared.

AT&T & Sprint to Provide Wi-FI Hotspots

Looks like Sprint and AT&T are going to be proving WI-FI access in public places around the US. My understanding is that it will not necessarily have the same footprint as cellular, but it will be available in places like airports. Sign me up!

Mozilla Wants to Rumble With IE

Now that Mozilla has separated from AOL, it looks like they are prepared to fight Microsoft over the browser turf. I am hoping this will force Microsoft to innovate. I like IE 6, but Mozilla 1.x is pretty darn good and things like tabbed browsing and a built-in pop-up blocker make it even better.
