The History Of Wired Magazine

cover

Wired - A Romance
is all about the history of Wired Magazine. It is not about wired online sex as the title might suggest. I have subscribed to Wired since day one despite the bizarre design and editorial shifts over the years. With this book you get to read all about the behind the scenes action. I just wonder if they have thought about changing the name to Wireless.

WiFi Finder

I have to have the new Kensington WiFi Finder. Actually, I would like to know the price first, but this would have to save me time over opening my laptop and launching Netstumbler. I guess I could use my IPAQ, but it can be so flaky. (via gizmodo)

Do You Get Stock Options?

The Microsoft story about not giving out stock options has been beaten to death, but I am wondering just how many companies still attempt to lure (and keep) employees with options instead of a decent salary.

What's New In Windows Mobile 2003

Here is a quick list of what is new in Windows Mobile 2003- Zero Configuration Wi-Fi, Bluetooth Support, New Connection Manager, Enhanced Messaging Support, Enhanced Keyboard Support, Enhanced Contacts, Enhanced Calendar, 'Pictures' Image Viewer, Windows Media Player 9 Series and an improved IE that supports more web standards.

Looks like the new Windows Mobile 2003 also comes with some Terminal Services enhancements. From what I can tell so far the TS client now has a tool bar which allows you to jump to one of the corners or to the center.

Microsoft has a nice online tour of each of these features that includes screenshots and more detailed information. Keep in mind that many older Pocket PCs can be updated.

Do We Need Service Packs For Service Packs?

Seems like I keep running across more and more problems with Windows 2000 SP4. I am sure it is almost impossible for Microsoft to test every combination of hardware, software and patches. Actually, I know it is impossible so I guess I can't expect a Service Pack to be perfect, but my suggestion is always to hold off on deploying any major update until it has been tested (on non production machines) and wait to see what comes out in the discussion forums.

Tokeshi has a great listing of all the potential issues with SP4.

Do you have OCD?

Do you feel withdrawal when not connected to the Internet? You may have online compulsive disorder (OCD). I swear I am not addicted because I read this article in the paper version of the Sunday NY Times at around 6:45 am today and it is taking me until 9:15 pm to actually go online and post it. That is not OCD, right?

Terminal Services Licensing

Licensing is still one of the most confusing aspects of deploying Terminal Services and Citrix. The issue is compounded by the fact that Microsoft itself does not clearly understand it depending on who you talk to. How can this be?

As much as we would like to think that Terminal Services is a big deal to Microsoft, (you must think that if you read this blog on a regular basis) the fact is that it does not, in the minds of many at Microsoft, deliver a significant amount of direct revenue. In other words, it is easy to understand the amount of revenue that Office and Windows XP bring in, but much harder to nail down what Terminal Services adds to the bottom line.

Once a Microsoft employee understands that using Terminal Services just enables more users access to applications like Office (that require licensing), the flood gates open and information starts to flow.

What is the point to all this? You should be very careful when asking anyone about how to license Terminal Services. Your Microsoft rep may or may not know the right answer. Read the Microsoft 2000 and 2003 FAQs and ask a reseller that deals with this on an everyday basis. Get it all in writing where you can.
